Game of Thrones fans started a charity to show their love and support of Kit Harington after word got around that he had checked himself into a health and wellness center in Connecticut to handle stress and alcohol issues.
In response to the outpouring of love from fans, Kit Harington donated £7,728.75 to the JustGiving.com page, which works out to be roughly $9,810.48. The amount seems specific, but it was enough to push the fundraiser over its goal of £50,000, or $63,000.
What Does the Cause Support?
Fans specifically chose the U.K.-based charity Royal Mencap society for it being close to Kit’s heart. He has spoken about supporting Mencap since 2017 and is known for donating money to the organization or lending his fame to their case.
The Royal Mencap Society touts themselves as the U.K.’s leading learning disability charity, and they work closely with both those with learning disabilities and their families. They organize events, fund research, and offer services to those who need it.
Mencap has been around since 1946 when the mother of a child with a learning disability saw a need for families just like hers. It was first called ‘The National Association of Parents of Backward Children’, but understandably the name was changed.
Why Kit Harington Needed This Fan Boost
If you haven’t watched Game of Thrones, or you haven’t finished the last season, we won’t spoil it for you – but know that the character Kit plays, Jon Snow, does some awful things. Game of Thrones was wildly popular during its 8-year run, and it received 47 Primetime Emmy Awards, including winning Outstanding Drama Series in 2015, 2016, and 2018.
The HBO series was a central part of these actors lives for many years, and they became very entwined with their characters and the story. Kit Harington reportedly had struggles with accepting that the show was ending, and his character was actually a monster.
He spoke to media outlets and said he was struggling with anxiety over closing this chapter of his life, and that he felt like the public was judging him for the action of his character.
In response to these feelings, Kit checked into the facility, which promotes the health of both mind and body. In a statement released by his representative, he said that Kit was taking the time to work on “personal issues”.
The facility uses mindful meditation, psychological coaching, and cognitive behavioral therapy to help its residents. It will run you over $120,000 a month for the service, too – though the Game of Thrones cast is famously well paid.
Kit’s wife Rose Leslie is also on the show, and reportedly extremely supportive of the move.
